You will no doubt be aware that there is a new piece of legislation on the statute book which affects landlords. It concerns the condition of rented property and will be coming into force on 20 March.
The bill was originally a private members bill sponsored by Karen Buck MP who felt it was necessary as none of the other legislation regarding the condition of rented property actually specified that it should be fit for human habitation.
The original bill was ‘talked out’ but it was brought back after the Grenfell disaster when people became a bit more sensitive to the question of property fitness. It received the Royal Assent on 20 December and so is due to come into force on 20 March.
Probably most landlords reading this will not have a problem with the act, as most landlords who subscribe to Landlord Law or who read our posts are responsible people who take care to keep their properties in good condition. The act is not really aimed at you.
However, it is important that all landlords know exactly what their obligations are so we are delighted that solicitor Giles Peaker (pictured) has agreed to take our February Landlord Law members training webinar – which will be on The Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 and what it means for landlords.
The webinar will take place on Wednesday 6 February at 10.30 am and will last about an hour.
Giles is the best person to explain this bill to us as he was part of Karen Buck’s legal team and therefore knows it very well.
Giles has said that he will be concentrating on the following issues in his talk
Which really covers everything you need to know. Although Giles will also be answering questions – so bring them with you!
This is a really important webinar and I would recommend that ALL landlords and agents attend if they can. If you are not a member yet see the link below.
If you cannot attend, the webinar will be recorded and put online for the benefit of our Business Level members.
